Development of large-capacity charger/discharger for large vehicles

KYUSHU ELECTRIC POWER CO.,INC.

Outline

This project relates to promoting the electrification of the transportation sector, and thereby contributing to the realization of a low-carbon, sustainable society.

With a strong focus on ESG, our company has been promoting electrification in all areas including production and services so that many more customers can appreciate the merits and value of electricity that is environmentally friendly and excellent in convenience. As for the electrification of large vehicles (fixed-route buses, trucks, etc.), its expansion has been rather slow due to issues related to operations and introduction costs.

In response, we will develop a large-capacity charger/discharger for large vehicles to support operators in introducing electric vehicles (electric buses, electric trucks, etc.), and therefore promoting the electrification of the transportation sector.

Description

In Japan, the transportation sector is responsible for approx. 20% of national CO₂ emissions, of which approx. 90% is by “car traffic”. The promotion of electrification in an effort to reduce car CO₂ emissions is a social challenge. As for large vehicles (fixed-route buses, trucks, etc.), the progress of electrification is currently slow due to issues related to operations and costs for introducing vehicles and charging facilities. The operation-related issues include one full charge only lasting a short travel distance, long charging time and the possibility of needing to recharge on the operation route.

In response, the Kyuden Group will develop a low-cost and multifunctional large-capacity charger/discharger for large vehicles and carry out function verification on the charger/discharger through actual field tests.

To be more specific, by shortening charging time by quick, large-capacity charging and by  using discharging power stored in a large electric vehicle, the charger/discharger will be validated for applicability to the management of energy in situations such as a peak-hour power outage in the office and the use of midnight power.

Moreover, in 2018, our company started validating the Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology by using electric cars as energy resources, and is planning to validate the Virtual Power Plant (VPP) concept in which as well as electric cars, stationary storage batteries, large electric vehicles, EcoCute, etc., will be used to provide a wide range of energy resources to ensure a good power demand and supply balance. The knowledge gained from these demonstrations will be used to provide services in different categories (EMS, VPP and BCP) so as to increase the added value of large electric vehicles while supporting operators in introducing large electric vehicles, and thereby promoting the electrification of the transportation sector.
