(JANUS), the JGC Group's consulting services company on energy and environmental protection, monitors and follows world trends including CCS-related technology and publishes updated information on the JANUS CCS News website. By disseminating easy-to-understand information to the general public, JANUS contributes to the further understanding of CCS and achieving a low-carbon society.

2. Initiatives for Early Deployment of CCS Technology
As part of a consortium led by 18 organizations, JANUS is an active participant in the “Environmentally Conscious CCS Demonstration Project” commissioned by the Ministry of the Environment.

Description

Japan NUS Co., Ltd. (JANUS), a member of JGC Holdings Corporation, is a consulting company specializing in energy and the environment. With regards to CCS work, JANUS is involved in a variety of projects, including conducting research on international trends (e.g., literature reviews, interviews), Japanese legal and regulatory reviews (funded by the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry), marine sequestration-related surveys, and participation in the “Demonstration Project of Sustainable CCS Technology.” In addition, JANUS participates in numerous international conferences such as International Energy Agency Greenhouse Gas (IEAGHG) and other conferences hosted by the Japanese government. As seen above, JANUS has been very active and has built an extensive network in the CCS world both domestically and internationally.

As CCS-related information floods the internet, JANUS CCS News is a platform to present accurate information promptly to the general public in an easy-to-understand manner. JANUS updates the website as new information is available.

As part of a consortium led by 18 organizations, JANUS participates in the “Demonstration Project of Sustainable CCS Technology” commissioned by the Ministry of the Environment. This project primarily focuses on the construction of facilities that separate and capture more than 50% of CO2 emitted from power plants. Out of four main components that make up the CCS process (separation and capture; transport; storage and monitoring; and smooth introduction and implementation of CCS), JANUS is examining the “monitoring” and “smooth introduction and implementation” aspects with the objective of early deployment of CCS technology. This facility is scheduled to be the world's first biomass-only power plant with CO2 separation and capture equipment. The facility has been attracting worldwide attention as possessing negative emissions technology—when separated and captured CO2 is stored successfully, the facility will exceed zero emissions and become a negative-emissions facility.
