Promoting safe operation of zero-emission nuclear power plants

JGC HOLDINGS CORPORATION

Outline

Japan NUS Co., Ltd. (JANUS), the JGC Group's consulting services company on energy and environmental protection, has been providing technical consulting services for nuclear power plants (NPPs) since our foundation.  Specifically, we provide information on overseas regulations and NPPs operation information, etc., to meet regulatory requirements and to support safe and efficient operation of nuclear power plants at a high capacity factor. As a great deal of regulatory compliance has been required since the Fukushima accident, we are promoting the restart of zero-emission nuclear power plants by providing support to meet new regulation.
In the back-end area, we also support the realization of a safe and secure nuclear fuel cycle business through survey of the latest developments and assessment.

Description

Nuclear Power Generation
- Regulation and operating experience at the US and major European country: Provides information on nuclear regulations and operating experience in the United States and major European countries. It contributes as basic information for regulatory compliance and horizontal deployment of operating experience.
- Advanced maintenance: Conducts surveys/analyses/consulting service to support the economical and safe operation of facilities during their life cycle.
- Aging management: Contributing NPPs aging management by providing the information US and major European country’s aging management activities for structure, system, and component.
- Reliability and risk assessment: For each level of Probabilistic Risk Assessments (PRA), level 1 PRA (assessment of the plant core damage frequency (CDF)), level 2 PRA (determination of the amount and frequency of radioactive substances released into the atmosphere), and level 3 PRA (assessment of the extent of impact on public individuals and populations), providing analysis and assessment services, as well as analysis support tools. JANUS also provides similar services and tools related to the operation and management of facilities in Japan, such as nuclear power plants that utilize risk information.
- Disaster prevention and exposure evaluation: To evaluate radiation exposure at nuclear power plants, an exposure dose evaluation system in normal operation and severe accident, as well as a gamma ray exposure evaluation system have been developed.  JANUS deploys and runs an emergency environmental impact evaluation system to quickly conduct an exposure evaluation of the surrounding area if radioactive materials are released into the atmosphere after an accident, and creates a disaster prevention map required for implementing disaster prevention measures.

Fuel Cycle and Waste Management
- Decommissioning: Survey and analyze information (project experience, safety regulations, legal systems, etc.) on the decommissioning of overseas nuclear facilities.
- Nuclear fuel cycle: Survey and analyze information on overseas nuclear fuel cycles, also conduct environmental impact assessment of the nuclear fuel cycle facility in Japan.
- Radioactive waste disposal: Support the research and development activities in Japan by conducting surveys of the latest information on research and development on radioactive waste disposal in Japan and overseas.
- Simulation of Underground Diffusion: Assess the effect of radionuclides that may diffuse from radioactive waste disposed of underground and conduct the impact analysis of radionuclides diffusing from different types of radioactive waste.
