Challenge for deploying Methane Fermentation Biogas Business

KURITA WATER INDUSTRIES LTD

Outline

In the methane fermentation biogas market, we provide one-stop solutions for the process from the launch of a project plan to the end of its operation, thereby contributing to building a decarbonized society. We aim to create from 10 MWh to 15 MWh of renewable energy (electric power equivalent) by 2050 by expanding our biogas business.

In addition, we will make continuous efforts to develop technologies in the belief that contributing to both the spread of renewable energy and the protection of water and the environment with technology is our unique, important challenge, from the viewpoint of contributing to achieving the SDGs.

This is because the provision of solutions to enable the commercialization of methane fermentation biogas projects, which were infeasible due to wastewater and environmental concerns, will lead to the spread of renewable energy and the protection of water and the environment.

We would like to contribute to building a decarbonized society towards the future through initiatives including the continuous development of technologies and the building of partnerships to expand this business.

Description

We are working to promote and expand this business, which will contribute to building a decarbonized society by providing one-stop solutions* in the market of methane fermentation biogas.

*One-stop solutions:
(1) One-stop provision of all services needed in the process from the launch of a project plan to the end of its operation
(including materials analysis and evaluation, project planning, facility design, construction, management of operations, proposals of services after the start of operations, and improvements)

(2) Contribution to green finance, which is made through the conversion to Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). Specifically, we are also working on a scheme which makes it possible to introduce equipment, etc. for a project, with no need for the project operator to assume the initial introduction cost. (Accelerating the implementation of this business by society, including owning equipment and investing in projects on our own)

We will create from 10 MWh to 15 MWh of renewable energy (in power equivalent) by 2050 and contribute to building a decarbonized society and securing regionally distributed energy, by expanding our biogas business through the above initiatives.

In addition, we believe that contributing to the spread of renewable energy and maximizing the shared benefits of the protection of water and the environment using technology is our unique, important challenge, from the viewpoint of contributing to achieving the SDGs.

This is because the provision of solutions that enable the commercialization of methane fermentation biogas projects, which are infeasible due to wastewater and environmental concerns, will lead to spread of renewable energy.

・Target to achieve through the initiatives
Contribute to creating from 10 MWh to 15 MWh of renewable energy (in power equivalent) by 2050 by expanding our biogas business

・Challenges to overcome to make the initiatives successful
(1) Improving costs for wastewater treatment and residue disposal, which greatly influence the economic efficiency (feasibility) of methane fermentation biogas projects, and improving technologies such as those for maximizing the amount of biogas generation

(2) Expanding this business to build a co-creation network for building a sustainable society
(Realizing collaborations to share the needs of the stakeholders and solve social issues)

*Including initiatives to coordinate with Society 5.0 and the Regional Circular and Ecological Sphere in formulating a long-term vision

・Specific actions of Kurita Water Industries
(1) Activities for building a decarbonized society by continuing to develop technologies to solve the above “challenges to overcome” and horizontally applying our expertise acquired at other sites where operations have already begun.

(2) Contributing to solving issues for building a decarbonized society by sharing our vision of the future with society, in which the methane fermentation biogas business will expand, and by increasing our partners

Partner(s)

We do not have any particular partners at present. Moving forward, we will consider building partnerships where it is appropriate for the geographical area or times.
